Even with its iconic first two rules, film fans can’t resist talking about Fight Club, especially as it approaches its 25th anniversary.

The 20th Century Fox project is known as a quintessential cult favorite with a passionate fanbase, but that wasn’t always the case. It flopped at the box office, grossing only $37 million domestically with a budget of $63 million, per The Los Angeles Times.

Those who did see it were split; it was either written it off as an overindulgent glorification of violence or praised as a biting satire of capitalism and other issues plaguing society.
