Press Council says Independent Media expelled, media house says it left [Video]

• The Press Council of South Africa and Independent Media are engaged in a war of words.
• The Press Council says it ousted Independent Media while the media house says it left of its own accord.
• This comes after Independent Media was told to apologise to News24 journalist Karyn Maughan.

The Press Council of South Africa (PCSA) was established to hold local media to a set of standards and ethics to protect both publications and readers from harm caused by misinformation and poor reporting. Publications join the organisation voluntarily but in doing so promise to abide by the rules set out by the PCSA.

One of the media houses that was part of PCSA was Independent Media which is home to the likes of IOL. Unfortunately, over the years Independent Media has made several missteps including what is still widely believed to be a fake story about a woman giving birth to decuplets.
