Streaming powerhouse Netflix is revamping its approach to film production. The company’s film chairman, Dan Lin, has decided to scale its original movie output down from the usual 50 per year to just 25-30.
Two causes sparked the change. One, a shift in focus toward creating higher-quality movies that resonate with audiences and two, saving money.
The pivot also reflects a broader understanding of viewer preferences and the need to stand out among competitors. Historically, Netflix embraced a “more is more” strategy, flooding its platform with an extensive variety of films in hopes of capturing diverse viewer interests. However, as competition intensified, Netflix has recognized that quantity alone doesn’t guarantee success.
