New photos may reveal deeper secrets of history [Video]

A state historical photographer and assistant are working to document inscriptions in the attic of one of Kansas’ most historically significant buildings.Photographs in the East Building of the Shawnee Indian Mission are taking place during an important phase for the site’s future.Ownership of the Shawnee Indian Mission is a matter of debate for generations to come.The struggle for control of the land and buildings of the national historic landmark near West 53rd and Mission Road recently became the focus of KMBC 9’s “Chronicle: Children of the Shawnee Mission.”The East Building of the Shawnee Indian Mission serves as the central welcome center and exhibit space for thousands of visitors and school tours each year.However, the attic is off-limits to the public.Dozens of writings, inscriptions, pictures and dates cover the walls and ceilings, and city and state leaders are working to ensure these are preserved.“Our job is to capture it in the …
