Detroit to accept cryptocurrency payments for taxes, fees [Video]

DETROIT (WWJ) — Detroit will soon become the largest city in the country that allows residents to pay taxes and other fees using cryptocurrency.

The city announced Thursday it is launching a program that allows crypto payments through a secure platform managed by PayPal. It is expected to become available in mid-2025, though officials did not say whether it will be prior to the tax deadline.

It’s part of a larger strategy by the city to “explore innovative technologies that could enhance public services, strengthen civic engagement, and foster economic growth,” officials said in a press release.

Officials say the initiative not only makes it easier for Detroit residents to transact with the city, but it also “marks Detroit’s commitment to welcoming blockchain and technology entrepreneurs who want to make a difference in the city.”
