Gardai arrest 178 drivers under the influence as 1,940 checkpoints carried out nationwide [Video]

GARDAI have arrested 178 drivers over seven days who were driving under the influence.

It comes as Gardai roll out their Christmas and New Year road safety policing operation.

Gardai have carried out 1,940 checkpoints in recent days.

The 178 drivers had been caught in the seven days before December 14, 2024.

Posting on social media Gardai said: “In the past seven days, we’ve carried out just over 1,940 checkpoints nationwide as part of our Christmas and New Year road safety operation, and arrested 178 people for driving while under the influence.”

And Gardai also seized 504 vehicles for a range of offences over the same time period.

These offences included having no motor tax.

They also issued 329 drivers fines and penalty points for mobile phone use while driving.

They said: “We’ve seized 504 vehicles over the past week for a range of offences under the Road Traffic Act, 1961 including no insurance or valid NCT.
