CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) provided a legal alert this week to school officials detailing their procedures in the event Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) visits to speak with a student.
CMS’ Office of General Counsel reiterated in its alert that it is legally obligated to provide equal educational opportunities to all students within its boundaries, regardless of their immigration status.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security ended previous guidelines this week that schools and churches were generally “off-limits” to ICE raids.
A DHS spokesperson said about the policy change,
“This action empowers the brave men and women in CBP and ICE to enforce our immigration laws and catch criminal aliens—including murders and rapists—who have illegally come into our country. Criminals will no longer be able to hide in America’s schools and churches to avoid arrest.
