LAS VEGAS, Nev. (FOX5) – There’s a new, crafty scam claiming items bought just went out of stock. FOX5 investigates how to protect yourself from this con during the holiday shopping season.
The Better Business Bureau says this often starts with phony social media ads. The product is bought online and shortly after, the card is charged. An email will be sent saying the product is out of stock and a refund will be issued.
However, it never comes.
Before buying anything online, officials say to do some research. Google the company name with the words “scam” to see if anyone else has complained.
Make sure the website starts with “https” and has a lock symbol. This means the website is secure.
Also, buy the item with a credit card instead of a debit card. Credit cards offer more protections if you need to report a fraudulent charge.
