Chicagos Black Harvest Film Festival returns for 30th year [Video]

CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A film festival centered on Black filmmakers and their experiences returns to Chicago this weekend.

The 30th annual Black Harvest Film Festival emphasizes authentic Black storytelling and representation.

“Black people are thirsty to see themselves represented in a way that doesn’t distort who we really are,” said Festival Curator Jada-Amina.

Jada-Amina said the festival will screen 16 feature films and 10 shorts representing over 18 different countries — with more than half them directed by women.

“There’s a range of different films showcasing different aspects of Black identity, whether it’s Black folks on the continent, in Brazil, in Uruguay [and] in Asia … there are, you know, stories for everyone, queer stories, there’s horror, there’s rom-com, there’s docs, and we do all of that just to show the breadth of Black life,” Jada-Amina said.

The festival takes place at the Gene Siskel Film Center Friday through Nov. 21.
