Despite a veto from Mayor Frey, the $2 billion 2025 budget for Minneapolis, including millions in new spending and a nearly 7% property tax levy, is moving forward.
MINNEAPOLIS — The Minneapolis City Council has overridden the mayor’s veto of the 2025 budget, which he called fiscally irresponsible.
The city council earlier this week took Mayor Jacob Frey’s proposed budget and reduced raises for the 160 highest-paid city staff members, deferred the implementation of technology projects and delayed the purchase of an internal computer software package. This brought the property tax levy increase from the proposed 8.3% down to 6.9%.
Council members passed 71 amendments to Frey’s budget, with many focused on public safety efforts in the city. Members voted to expand the city’s Behavioral Crisis Response and to fund five civilian investigators to be added to the police force to look into non-violent cases.
