In this Gibson acoustic comparison video Dinesh is comparing two of Gibson’s most iconic acoustic guitars: the Gibson J-45 “Workhorse” and the Gibson SJ-200. These guitars are for different playing styles and musical needs, with different sound profiles and designs, and they can certainly traverse any genre – but they have a few key differences that some players will appreciate for certain styles.
The Gibson J-45, also known as the “Workhorse”, is the most recorded acoustic guitar of all time.
Its balanced mid-range, bass and treble makes it perfect for singer-songwriters, strumming and fingerpicking. In this version we’re using, it has a sitka spruce top, mahogany back and sides, and features LR Baggs VTC electronics so you can get the same sonic qualities when miked up. The J-45 provides smooth even notes and is widely regarded as the ultimate all-rounder acoustic guitar for any player.
But how does the J-45 compare against the SJ-200?
The Gibson SJ-200 is a big-box acoustic known for its huge projection and full sound, providing a much louder, and certainly bassier tonal quality that some singer songwriters, acoustic players and certainly country and western players enjoy. This version we’re suing today features a maple back, sides and neck, with LR Baggs Anthem electronics. The SJ-200 captures every detail with a under-saddle pickup and condenser microphone so your miked-up sound is accurately representative of the acoustic tonal qualities. Of course it has that beautifully regal design with crown inlays, gold hardware and flame maple, perfect for rhythm players and those who want a larger than life acoustic tone.
Whether you like the J-45 or the SJ-200, this will help you decide which Gibson classic is for you. Tell us what you think – should you buy a Gibson SJ-200 or a Gibson J-45?
