Hartford, Conn. officials announce new police chief [Video]

HARTFORD, Conn. — City officials have announced Hartford’s next police chief, who they believe will continue the city’s mission to engage with the community and provide public safety.

Philadelphia Police Captain Tyrell McCoy has been hired to become Hartford’s Police Chief, Mayor Arunan Arulampalam announced Friday.

“We wanted to find a leader who was truly transformational, a leader who could lead this police department into the next generation, and we believe we found that leader,” Arulampalam said.

What the mayor is looking for in a police chief is a leader who will continue building the relationship between the police and the community, engage in “smart policing” and use a data-driven approach to tackle crime at the source.

“What really drew me to Captain McCoy is his balance of that,” Arulampalam said.
