TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) – Seventy percent of Americans exceed their budgets while holiday shopping every year. Whether your fingers are doing the shopping or you are hitting the stores in person, it is easy to rack up your bills.

Ron Hodge is the President and Senior Financial Advisor of Valley Group Wealth Management. Hodge says he sees a pattern every year of people impulsively using credit cards during holiday shopping.

He says this tends to happen because you aren’t immediately seeing the money leave your account. Research shows people have a “disconnect” with swiping their cards.

Consumer spending is of course high during this time of year, but he says there is always a gap between knowing what you are spending and what is happening on the credit card statement.
