Plenty of news stories sprung from the King’s visit to Canberra yesterday. There was Lidia Thorpe’s protest, Hephner the monarchist alpaca, but perhaps most controversial was a small detail on the official parliamentary reception menu.

Eagle-eyed pundits noticed that the “sweet platter” served for dessert included an “Anzac cookie”.

It might seem innocent enough at first, but using the term “cookie” to describe the iconic baked good might actually be illegal.

According to the official guidelines published by the Department of Veteran’s Affairs for using the term Anzac, the only acceptable names for the sweet treats are Anzac biscuit and Anzac slice.
