More than 250 volunteers gather to provide resources for homeless [Video]

COLUMBUS, Ohio — More than 250 volunteers went out into the community Thursday morning to help those experiencing homelessness.

This effort, called the point-in-time count, is led each year by the Community Shelter Board.

“We are experiencing record homelessness in our community, but we want to make sure people are safe,” said Michael Wilkos, vice president of community engagement for the United Way of Central Ohio. “This cold snap really identifies the critical need.”

Twenty-three groups gathered at camps of sheltered and unsheltered homeless populations, providing them materials and educating them about available services.

The volunteer groups traveled across Columbus and Franklin County to gather information on the number of people facing homelessness.

The count allows the CSB to see what their immediate needs are and then connect them to resources, such as mental health or addiction services.
