EUGENE, Ore. — Oregon has officially banned the sale of fluorescent lightbulbs as of January 1, becoming the seventh state to enact legislation of this kind that is aimed at reducing environmental toxins. House Bill 2531 prohibits the sale of the mercury-containing bulbs and encourages residents and businesses to transition to energy-efficient LED lighting.
Fluorescent light bulbs, which contain small amounts of mercury — a toxic metal that is harmful to both health and the environment — can no longer be purchased in Oregon. LED lights, while initially more expensive, are more energy-efficient and have a longer lifespan.
