She arrived at the school in Chesterfield County as women’s basketball coach in 1997 and ultimately elevated to athletic director and associate vice president for intercollegiate athletics. Davis died Wednesday morning, according to a letter to the VSU community from the school president, Makola M. Abdullah.
Davis, who was 62, oversaw VSU athletics for two decades up until her death. The school’s media relations department elected not to provide a cause of death. Abdullah’s letter referred to Davis’ death as a “sudden loss” and said memorial arrangements will be shared when available.
“For more than 27 years, she has been an integral leader of our athletics department, leading with exceptional dedication and compassion for our student-athletes. Words cannot fully capture what Mrs. Davis meant to Virginia State University,” Abdullah wrote in his letter.
