Penn Museum to host free day full of Kwanzaa celebrations [Video]

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Get ready for a day of free, family fun at the Penn Museum.

Starting at noon on Dec. 29, they will be hosting a Kwanzaa Celebration honoring African heritage and community.

“This is the Harvest, this is the gathering — the gathering of a great people,” said Malika Parker, CEO of the Afro Culture Preservation Council, a nonprofit educating Black and Brown communities.

There will be a drumming procession, lively dances, cultural storytelling and an interactive candle-lighting ceremony that goes over the seven Kwanzaa principles.

In the upstairs galleries, kids can explore the children’s village, for older kids there will be a scavenger hunt. And, of course, free gifts for attendees made by museum staff and community members.

“A key part of Kwanzaa celebrations are the gifts that are shared and made throughout the year,” said Rorujorona Ferrell with the Penn Museum.
