The average household is expected to spend €1,555 more on retail during December compared to other months, marking a 1% increase from last year, according to new data released by Retail Ireland, the Ibec group representing the retail sector.
Retail Ireland projects total retail spending in December to reach approximately €8.9bn, which is €3bn higher than typical monthly spending.
The group attributes part of the growth in Christmas spending to Budget 2025, which injected €2bn into the economy in November and December through additional cost-of-living supports.
“Black Friday falling a week later than last year and adverse weather earlier in December caused some delays in Christmas shopping, but recent days have shown encouraging trends,” said Arnold Dillon, Director of Retail Ireland.
Mr. Dillon expressed optimism that this momentum would result in positive trading figures following a challenging year. However, he noted that consumers remain discerning.
