A mosque near the Houston home of Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who police say carried out the New Year’s Day attack in New Orleans, has urged its congregation not to respond to media inquiries and to refer to other Islamic organizations if contacted by the FBI.
Speaking to Newsweek a spokesperson for the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) said they were aware of the post but hadn’t yet talked to the mosque about its authenticity.
In a statement the group said: “We stand in solidarity with the people of New Orleans in the wake of this senseless and horrific crime. Anyone with any potentially relevant information should come forward immediately, and our attorneys stand ready to help arrange and facilitate communication with relevant law enforcement agencies.”
Newsweek contacted the Houston Masjid Bilal and the Islamic Society of Greater Houston for comment via email on Thursday outside regular office hours.
