YAZOO CITY, Miss. (WLBT) – Truvander Brown Kennedy was only 5 years old when she had a life-changing experience in her Yazoo City hometown.
It was July 1977, and the President of the United States of America, Jimmy Carter, was in town speaking at the then-brand-new Yazoo City High School.
Carter met with the people of Yazoo City in the gym, taking questions and talking about then-current issues. Tickets for the event were hard to come by.
”And I can remember when he finally came out of the room and the crowd, of course, is you know the energy is moving through the crowd, and he gets to my section and I reach my little hand out, and he actually shakes my hand, and I’m not much taller now, but I was a little bitty person then, and he touched my hand, and all I can remember is turning around …
